Chapter 8

“That’s it! That’s the last straw!

“As if keeping us waiting for over an hour isn’t bad enough, he doesn’t even have the decency to answer his phone!”

Harriett pressed the ‘End Call’ button on her mobile and allowed herself a small scream of frustration. “I wish I’d never listened to Jeremy and we’d just looked through the Yellow Pages instead.”

“I expect that’s the last we’ll see of the money we gave him.” Leo’s face was puce as he looked out of the window for the umpteenth time. “I feel so stupid that he pulled the wool over my eyes—I’ve been around for long enough to know a scammer when I see one.”

“I’m going to call Jeremy. Maybe he’ll know where Graham is. Jeremy, is that you? This is Harriett Lawley—you know, Derek Whittington’s friend. Yes, that’s right. Well, it’s him I’m calling about. You don’t happen to know where he is, do you? No, he hasn’t turned up and he’s not answering his phone.

“We gave him the benefit of the doubt but this is the second time he’s left us waiting—and we’ve given him three hundred pounds upfront to get started. I’m afraid this is just too bad. If you see him before we do, would you please tell him he can consider himself off the job, and that we want our money back. Yes, that’s right. Thank you. Goodbye.”

“What did he say?” Leo strode back and forth, his fury spurring him on to walk faster and faster.

“He said he hasn’t seen him recently but he’ll try to get hold of him. Honestly, I’m so furious, I could spit.” Harriett wound her scarf around her neck. “Come on, let’s go and get a cup of coffee. We’ve done enough waiting around for one day.”

“Liz, pick up if you’re there, will you? Liz?

“Okay, you’re obviously not there. Look, when you see Graham, tell him to give Harriett Lawley a call, will you? Sharpish. He was supposed to be starting her decorating job this morning at nine but he didn’t turn up and she’s fuming. And she’s given him three hundred pounds to buy materials with. I’ve tried his number a couple of times but all I’m getting is a recorded message. I’ll leave it with you, okay? Speak soon.”

Jeremy Faraday didn’t take kindly to having his choreography sessions interrupted to solve problems that weren’t his own—particularly when Graham was involved. He wished he’d never recommended him to Harriett. He knew how unreliable his brother was but he’d hoped he might knuckle down and get the job done on this occasion.

His phone rang almost immediately. “You didn’t need to call me back, I just wanted you to speak to Graham and tell him to get his backside round to Harriett Lawley’s place. What d’you mean, you don’t know where he is? Okay, I’ll wait till you get here. See you in a bit.”

He sighed. He’d had a feeling when he woke up that this wasn’t going to be a good day.

Ten minutes later, Liz arrived for her dance lesson looking anything but prepared.
